Tomb Raider 3 rectified this with less encounters, less guns for enemies, but it's level design is often convoluted, the game punishes you if you don't choose to do Area 51 in the beginning, (say goodbye to your stuff and the game just give back 1/3 of your guns/ammo), the poison mechanic is a bad idea, the save system (on console) is crystals again. Tomb Raider 2 introduced much more foes and much more humans enemies and it was atrocious you'd get assaulted from everywhere, shot at from distance without being able to react or seeing them, and each fight resulted in using a medikit just after, cool levels though, horrible vehicles sections and driving mechanics, best Croft Manor (butler freezer flashback) but what the hell with the difficulty curve ? Have you seen what the first level throws at you? The story, music, locations, ambiance and puzzles are a in a league of their own, the Croft Manor is an absolute masterpiece of a tutorial level, for me and in my honest opinion, the first Tomb Raider has never been matched in all the sequels, terrible flaws were apparent as soon as you touched just one aspect of the game and try to expend on it, it was a perfect but very fragile formula, the enemy encounters for example are scarce and few between, it's good for the pacing, the tension and the shooting doesn't overstay it's welcome, it only gets worse in the later levels due to the very agile and bullet-sponge monsters, you got mazes like levels with intricate puzzle but you always have something like a landmark to keep you from getting lost, puzzles are good without being bullshit (Tomb Raider 4.). Tomb Raider 1 is one of the biggest achievement in video game history, i can make the claim it would have completely blown away everyone and made a bigger impact if Super Mario 64 wasn't released just a mere few months before, it nailed pretty much every thing it was trying to do giving the limitations and context of the time, just remember : there was no template to follow. Maybe we'll get that if the Mass Effect trilogy remaster is a huge success. Although they do look and feel dated, IMO. But the original trilogy is still great today. I don't think we'll be seeing anymore for a long time. The new games pretty much killed the series. What's worse, it never felt like she became the Tomb Raider after the origin story. Playing as Lara Croft was depressing and monotonous. What we got instead was Uncharted without the great cast of characters and fun adventure stories. I feel that this would have made the new TR games feel less like Uncharted and even less like their predecessors, which are viewed by most to be superior. You choose who she becomes and those choices carry over into the sequels and have real consequences.

This way the player feels a greater attachment to Lara Croft. Dialogue trees, skill checks, open world design, many locations, etc. I think they should have turned it into a action adventure RPG with skill trees similar to Skyrim Lara's abilities evolve based on how you play. Personally, I think Tomb Raider souls have gone in a completely different direction. It's too bad the modern games didn't catch on and felt nor like a poor man's Uncharted. I played them when they came out as a kid. I've heard that the third one is the best of the three, but I'm not sure I'll ever invest time in it. I played all the first one, but I given up about at the middle of the second one.

Worst part is that they basically did everything wrong with the IP, making it a boring shooter and binding the only really good part about the game, the tombs (is called Tomb Raider for a reason.) to something secondary. Gameplay is super average and story/writing seems taken from some B movies plot. Sadly the new trilogy is pretty embarrassing for an IP of that caliber. The best part about Tomb Raider has always been the exploration and puzzles IMHO, shooting was just something to add tension and give you a chance against the few animals that were placed around the level. Played the first 2 games again some years ago and I liked them both, except for the terrible controls, but was pretty common in that era. I loved the first 4 games back in the days, even if I was a kid and them were so difficult that I used lot of cheats to finish lot of levels.
